You don’t get a hand in major decisions of your backstory in most FO games, like where you come from or who your family is. New Vegas aside, all Fallout games are more like FO4 in terms of giving the protagonist a definite objective and a backstory that gives urgency to that backstory.įO1: you are a vault dweller desperate to replace your vault’s broken water chipįO2: you are a tribal desperate to find your kidnapped villageįO3: you are a vault dweller desperate to find your fatherĪnd once you find what you are looking for, you get wrapped up in a bigger plot that decides the fate of the entire region. Much more atmospheric, and much better storytelling with real choice and consequences. It actually feels like you're in the Brotherhood of Steel.Īnd you are right about Far Harbor, it's better than the base game storyline in many ways. You're still following orders, but you get promoted through the ranks and earn respect. On the other hand, the BoS playthrough was pretty good. I did a playthrough with the Resistance and it was just terrible, I never felt any motivation to do the things I was being asked and never felt like I was part of something. Despite the freedom you get in actual gameplay, the quest dialogue forces you into the desperate parent role, and playing a character outside that mold requires a lot of suspension of disbelief. And your family situation drives the entire main quest. Female player is an ex-lawyer mom desperate to find her missing child, male player is a veteran dad desperate to find his missing child. I still think most of the criticism for FO4 stems more from "New Vegas did it better" fan disappointment, not necessarily criticism useful to all roleplaying gamers.įrom a roleplaying perspective, the major complaint is that you are shoehorned into a role from the start, and your dialogue choices don't really allow for much deviation from it. And your actions, particularly in terms of gangs you defeat or ally with, have visible effects in game. It's not really an RPG, but it is an open-world game with RPG mechanics, and you can make your character look like just about anything you want. It's a lot like Skyrim in that the major decisions you take don't have much visible effect on the game world or in NPC reactions.Īnd coming at it from a completely different angle, I really enjoyed the Saints Row games, particularly Saints Row the Third. There are so many guilds and factions you can join, groups you can become allied to or alienate, etc, that you really do create your own story and no two playthroughs have to be the same.įallout 4 is at the other end of the above spectrum it places a lot of emphasis on exploring and building settlements, but its story is weak by comparison to the others. There's much more emphasis on story and character in Morrowind than in those later games.
